Medical LOA: Overview

You can update your patients’ ongoing events at your facility to reflect a temporary medical leave of absence (MLOA). We strongly encourage our community to correctly capture MLOAs in Bamboo so that your length of stay data is accurate, both for your ACO partners and for your internal reporting needs.

Medical LOA: How-to

For facilities manually entering patient events into Bamboo: you can indicate an MLOA by clicking the edit pencil on the patient’s card, selecting ‘Update status’, and choosing ‘medical leave of absence’ from the status dropdown.

To close the MLOA, you can follow the same steps and choose either resumed services if the patient returns to your facility, or ended services if they do not.

Pro Tip: You do not need to discharge a patient in order to reflect an MLOA. You can use the MLOA status instead!

Indicate a patient's Medical LOA:

1
Click the edit pencil on the patient's card
2
Select  update
3
Choose medical leave of absence in the status dropdown
4
Enter the date on which the MLOA began
5
Indicate a related payer change, as applicable, by clicking  add new insurance or  switch insurance
6
Click  update
The patient’s MLOA status will be reflected upon their patient card, in their patient profile, and in exports. Patients on MLOA will remain on your  currently admitted  filter and their visit duration will reflect the number of days in their  current  setting.

You can indicate the end of a patient's MLOA with one of two statuses:  resumed services or ended services.

1
Click the edit pencil on the patient's card
2
Select  update status
3
Select  resumed services or  ended services in the  status dropdown
4
Enter the date on which the MLOA ended
5
Indicate a related payer change, as applicable, by clicking  add new insurance or  switch insurance
6
Click  update

The patient’s MLOA status will be reflected upon their patient card, in their profile, and in exports. Patients on MLOA will remain on your currently admitted filter and their visit duration will reflect the number of days in their current setting.
